There really are no hard and fast rules to buying. This simple guide could apply equally to any item you may purchase..

Do's
- Always get a written quote.Get a written quote
A written quote is essential, whether its written there and then, or typed up and sent to you.
Ensure it states the Make and Model, Price, New or Reconditioned and any specifications that were discussed.
Anything else that you talked about should be written down too, for example, your sales rep might suggest that the company will pay you back for the lift if it is removed early.
Unless this is written down, the Companys general terms and conditions will apply, these may state something completely different!
- Compare several suppliers.Compare suppliers
By obtaining your written quotations, you will be able to make a much more informed decision.
Together with each companies policy on service and maintenance, removal of the lift procedures and general overal attitude.
You can then be confident that the right choice is going to be made. This procedure will not take long but could really pay off in the future.
Remember, no one make or model is the best, clever advertising might make you think that it is.
- Haggle! it really does pay off.Haggling !! ?
I'm sure we have all seen the insurance adverts based on this concept.
Its a fact of life that almost all companies are prepared to negotiate their price list to some extent but be wary of those that manage to halve the price!
A 5% or 10% variation on a genuine sale price is considered acceptable, anything more than this then the starting price was simply too high in the first place.
Don'ts
- Never rush into a quick decision.Quick Descisions
This is probably the worst thing that you can do!
Your friendly sales rep will be counting on his polished sales talk to get you excited about your new purchase, the price seems right, everything seems just what you wanted!
The next day you find out the product was much cheaper elsewhere. Your guarantee period could have been improved.
We do this to ourselves all the time, and each time we say ..
'oh I wish i had shopped around'
- Don't take the first price offered.Reject the first price
Any company that has a genuine price structure will provide you with a fair price first time.
However, this will be their general list price. You can expect at least 5% discount, just for asking!
If you manage to get what seems to be a huge discount, say 50% off! that simply suggests that the price was far too high in the first place.
You may feel very pleased with yourself, but what other hidden surprises will that company have in store for you once you have made a purchase!
- Never sign up the same day.Signing up the same day
This is really just the same as making a quick descision.
Especially if its the first sales rep that you have met.
Remember, the offer you are being made right at that moment will always be available.
Dont be fooled by the managers special that just happens to be available only for today.
Most of these points are fairly obvious while you are reading them, it is very
easy to forget when a clever salesman is telling you his story!
